Nudity

NuditySudden, secret, or out in full view—Lady Godiva, on her horse. The famous courtesan Phryne won a court case in ancient Athens by exposing her beautiful breasts. The Greeks thought her beauty divine. It’s easy to feel the naked beauty of your lover is divine. Perhaps the best and truest compliment we can give lovers’ looks is to tell them to leave the light on.

Nudity is perhaps the ultimate sexual self-presentation—the opposite of dressing up, the showing of all of yourself as you truly are without pretense or false modesty. (We talk about exhibitionism here.) It’s associated with a kind of innocence, the innocence of babies, who prefer to be naked. Nudity doesn’t have to be sexual—nudists and naturists prefer nakedness for most activities. Finland, France, Spain, Italy and most of the rest of Europe consider topfree sunbathing fine.

Nudity can be freeing. Naked, we are all more equal. But some nudity seems more equal than others. The nudity of the gorgeous, the nudity of our lovers—that is special. It can seem a doorway to the divine.
